About Ms. Gonçalves:
Ms. Gonçalves is starting her fifth year as an English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher at Summit High School. She is looking forward to continuing to foster relationships within Summit Latinx community and work with Summit’s English Language Learners.
Ms. Gonçalves’ parents immigrated from Portugal to America about twenty-five years ago, and, therefore, she has experienced what it is like to grow up in two cultures. Her experiences highly motivated her to empower English Language Learners’ voices within academic settings and beyond. For this reason, she studied Linguistics at Montclair State University in order to become an ESL teacher. After graduating, she taught ESL as a leave replacement at Hillside High School, the same school she completed her student-teaching. Ms. Gonçalves collaborated with Empowering Kids Organization to provide a community programs. She also is a member of the Alliance 4 Latino Empowerment Organization, and she has organized the 2021 and 2022 Latino Youth Empowerment Conferences. In the Spring, she teaches a College Awareness Program to Latinx families, a program funded by Andy Gottesman. Her goal this year is to continue to be involved in community, but also empower students to be curious and engaged learners.

La Sra. Gonçalves está comenzando su quinto año como profesora de inglés como segundo idioma (ESL) en la escuela secundaria de Summit. Ella está deseando continuar fomentando las relaciones dentro de la comunidad Latinx de Summit y trabajar con los estudiantes de inglés de Summit.
Los padres de la Sra. Gonçalves emigraron de Portugal a Estados Unidos hace unos veinticinco años y, por lo tanto, ella ha experimentado lo que es crecer en dos culturas. Sus experiencias la motivaron mucho para potenciar las voces de los estudiantes de inglés dentro de los entornos académicos y más allá. Por esta razón, estudió Lingüística en la Montclair State University para convertirse en profesora de ESL. Después de graduarse, enseñó ESL como reemplazo de licencia en la Escuela Secundaria Hillside, la misma escuela en la que completó su enseñanza como estudiante. La Sra. Gonçalves colaboró con la organización Empowering Kids para ofrecer programas comunitarios. También es miembro de la organización Alliance 4 Latino Empowerment, y ha organizado las Conferencias de Empoderamiento de la Juventud Latina 2021 y 2022. En la primavera, ella enseña un Programa de Concientización Universitaria a las familias Latinx, un programa financiado por Andy Gottesman. Su objetivo este año es continuar involucrándose en la comunidad, pero también empoderar a los estudiantes para que sean estudiantes curiosos y comprometidos
