About Ms. Gonçalves:
About Ms. Gonçalves:
Ms. Gonçalves is starting her seventh year as an English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher at Summit High School. She is looking forward to continuing to foster relationships within Summit Latinx community and work with Summit’s English Language Learners.
Ms. Gonçalves’ parents immigrated from Portugal to America about thirty-five years ago, and, therefore, she has experienced what it is like to grow up in two cultures. Her experiences highly motivated her to empower English Language Learners’ voices within academic settings and beyond. For this reason, she studied Linguistics at Montclair State University in order to become an ESL teacher. After graduating, she taught ESL as a leave replacement at Hillside High School, the same school she completed her student-teaching. Ms. Gonçalves collaborated with Empowering Kids Organization to provide a community programs. She also is a member of the Alliance 4 Latino Empowerment Organization, and she has organized the 2021 and 2022 Latino Youth Empowerment Conferences. Her goal this year is to continue to be involved in the community, but also empower students to be curious and engaged learners.

La Sra. Gonçalves comienza su séptimo año como profesora de inglés como segunda lengua (ESL) en Summit High School. Está deseando seguir fomentando las relaciones dentro de la comunidad latina de Summit y trabajar con los estudiantes de inglés de Summit.
Los padres de la Sra. Gonçalves emigraron de Portugal a Estados Unidos hace unos treinta y cinco años, por lo que ella ha experimentado lo que es crecer en dos culturas. Sus experiencias la motivaron enormemente a empoderar las voces de los estudiantes de inglés dentro y fuera del ámbito académico. Por esta razón, estudió Lingüística en la Universidad Estatal de Montclair con el fin de convertirse en profesora de ESL. Después de graduarse, enseñó ESL como sustituta en Hillside High School, la misma escuela en la que completó sus prácticas docentes. La Sra. Gonçalves colaboró con la organización Empowering Kids para ofrecer programas comunitarios. También es miembro de la organización Alliance 4 Latino Empowerment y ha organizado las conferencias Latino Youth Empowerment de 2021 y 2022. Su objetivo este año es seguir participando en la comunidad, pero también empoderar a los estudiantes para que sean alumnos curiosos y comprometidos.
